Immigrants are us. We see you. We are you. We stand with you.

The immigrant community faces significant challenges today: travel bans, family separation at the border, public charge, attempts to limit access to asylum particularly for survivors of domestic violence, and most recently the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These difficulties branch out into other problems--economic, health, and racial crises, which threaten the safety, stability, and well-being of immigrants and their families. All these adversities compound to create an uneven playing field for our immigrant neighbors that limits the potential of the Northern Virginia region.

For nearly half a century, NVFS has developed resources and programs that meet the unique needs of our community and the immigrants within it. We consider the difficulties that immigrants and their families face as a core component of our mission – “To empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life, and to promote community cooperation and support in responding to family needs.”

In the 1970s NVFS and the community partnered to respond to the Southeast Asian refugee crisis. In 2008 NVFS and the community united to create the Multicultural Center which supports immigrant children and families in culturally (and linguistically) sensitive ways across all our programs, and this continues to successfully change lives for the better, today.

In 2020, during this unprecedented time NVFS is once again stepping up to support our immigrant neighbors. And with the community’s help – your help – we can succeed in:

  • Providing wraparound services designed to address immigrants’ needs as a whole person by helping them access programs for their basic, legal, and mental health needs
  • Teaching immigrant teens the skills necessary to thrive in their new communities including decision-making, critical thinking, and developing healthy, fulfilling relationships
  • Connecting teens with positive extra-curricular activities and access to community resources which will help improve their school performance and promote their ability to make choices that correspond with their life goals
  • Helping families navigate the challenges of reunification after immigration-related separations
  • Providing trauma recovery services and support for youth who have experienced violence in a variety of forms
  • Providing development and training opportunities to the professionals (counselors, teachers, etc.) who serve children which will better empower them to respond efficiently and effectively to the needs of immigrant youth and families

These are lofty goals. But NVFS knows, from experience, that when the Northern Virginia community unifies we can succeed, together, in strengthening individuals, families, and ultimately – our community.

Your support is critical to ensuring NVFS can help the immigrants and their families in our community overcome the variety of adversities they are facing. Thank you for joining us and ensuring that our immigrant neighbors will not merely survive, but thrive!
